Historia
Formación emblemática del rock californiano de los 60, creada en julio de 1965 cuando el cantante y líder del grupo, Jim Morrison y el tecladista Ray Manzarek se conocieron en la escuela de cine de la Universidad de California. Robbie Krieger en el bajo y John Densmore a la batería completaron el grupo, que tomó su nombre del título de una conocida novela de Aldous Huxley y William Blake, The Doors of Perception (Las Puertas de la Percepción). Su primera presentación fue en un viejo y olvidado bar al que asistieron solo 9 personas, y así comenzaron, tocando en "bares de mala muerte" intentando ganar algo de dinero para mantener su carrera como músicos; su estilo de música era una mezcla de las improvisaciones al estilo jazz y del rigor clásico. Les costo mucho encontrar alguna empresa que produjera su primer disco pero finalmente firman con una pequeña compañía llamada Elektra Records con la que produjeron sus 6 discos en estudio mas un en vivo. Debutaron discograficamente en 1967 a un año de su formación, el disco llamado al igual que la banda recibió muy buenas criticas. En plena explosión del movimiento hippie y de la contracultura, sus hit-singles Light my fire y Hello, I love you hicieron de ellos un grupo extraordinariamente famoso en poco tiempo, sobre todo cuando actuaron en el Ed Sullivan Show. Allí Jim Morrison desafió la orden de Ed Sullivan de no pronunciar la palabra "higher" (sinónimo de elevado o drogado) mientras interpretaban Light my fire lo cual resulto un completo escándalo. Efectivamente, gran parte del éxito de The Doors se centró siempre en el peculiar carisma, personalidad y forma de ser de Jim Morrison; el público siempre estaba expectante de sus impredecibles actitudes como las de entrar en transe y bailar descontroladamente por todo el escenario, además de proclamar el amor, el sexo, las drogas y el rock'n roll. Sus letras solían tratar sobre sexo y drogas; el músico y poeta publicó en 1971 dos libros de poemas sobre dichos temas llamados Las Nuevas Criaturas y Los Señores. Además, a cada concierto le agregaba un condimento especial que consistía en un momento en el que recitaba fragmentos de poemas de sus autores favoritos y en algunos casos fragmentos de sus poemas. Jim Morrison, verdaderamente odiaba la autoridad y solía agredir a todo aquel que se encargara de seguridad en sus presentaciones en vivo con la banda, por lo cual fue detenido 2 veces por la policía en diferentes eventos: la primera detención fue por utilizar lenguaje obsceno, en diciembre de 1967, en la presentación del disco Strange Day que salió a la venta el 1 de octubre de ese año. Y la segunda vez fue en Miami por obscenidad pública, donde los guardias lo detuvieron en pleno show cuando intentaba masturbarse en público.
El 1 de julio de 1968 sacan al mercado el disco Waiting for the Sun. Este disco contenía canciones que ya no trataban tanto de sexo y drogas sino que venían cargadas con más contenido social. Luego el 1 de julio 1969 editaron lo que sería su peor disco llamado The Soft Parade que, a pesar de que sus canciones contenían arreglos interesantes, no se comparaban en calidad con los anteriores. En 1970 sale a la venta el disco Morrison Hotel, y luego el 1 de abril de 1971 el disco L.A. Woman. Ambos discos estuvieron muy influenciados por el blues y reivindicaron al conjunto luego de The Soft Parade, aunque durante la edición de L.A. Woman el productor Paul Rothchild decidió no meterse "porque ese producto no valía la pena" y además porque la voz de Morrison estaba perdiendo su esencia. Este último disco cuenta con 2 canciones muy famosas y de gran calidad musical, como son L.A. Woman y Riders on the Storm. Luego Jim decide viajar a Paris para dedicarse a escribir y alejarse un tiempo de su profesión como cantante de rock. Un mes después de haberse marchado se conoce la noticia de que había sufrido un infarto provocado por abuso de drogas y alcohol el 3 de julio de 1971, y su cuerpo había sido encontrado en la bañera de su apartamento en Paris. Morrison tiempo antes había dicho a algunos amigos suyos: "Primero fue Jimi Hendrix, después fue Janis, yo soy el numero tres". Hoy sus restos descansan en el cementerio parisino de Pere-Lachaise.
El resto de The Doors intento seguir sin Jim Morrison, pero obviamente, nada podía volver a ser igual. El trío editó Other Voices y Full Circle, pero a finales de 1972 anunciaron el final definitivo del grupo. Solo Ray Manzarek sigue activo en la música, trabajando como productor, mientras que Robbie Krieger hizo un tímido intento de regreso en 1977 poniendo en marcha un proyecto al que llamó Robbie Krieger and Friends, pero no tuvo ninguna continuidad. En 1978 los tres miembros del grupo se reunieron para grabar An American Prayer, una colección de poemas de Jim Morrison recitado por él antes de morir para los que compusieron y grabaron especialmente la música. La fama y la gloria que alcanzó The Doors al igual que muchos otros grupos de esa época no morirá jamás, aun hoy se reeditan sus discos y siguen sumando adeptos por todo el mundo,
